New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival 1976 - Various Artists
This was a real surprise find at last sunday's boot sale. Great live recordings of some classic New Orleans artists, including a whole side from Allen Toussaint. My favourite stuff on the album is the storming performance from Irma Thomas and the grand old blues of Lightnin' Hopkins who introduces Slow and Easy by telling us that "...it takes an old man to sing this song, cos the young folks can't sing it to save they lives". Getting old obviously has its perks then.
Track List:
01 High Life /Sweet Touch of Love / Play Something Sweet / Shoorah Shoorah / Freedom for the Stallion (Recorded April 9 1976). ALLEN TOUSSAINT

03 Ain't It the Truth / Mother-in-Law (April 11th 1976) ERNIE K-DOE

Ooh poo pah doo! I don't believe it! I borrowed this from a record library (remember them, pop kids) in about 77/78 and taped it. Played it in the car (on an old 'Scotch C90' cassette tape) for weeks. Filed it away and returned to it regularly over the years until the tape broke, about 20 years ago. I fixed it with those little splicing blocks you used to buy (remember the, pop kids) and played on, despite a huge chunk now being missing. ANd it is something I've always wanted to replace. And here it is! Incredible! After a hard day at work I'm sitting down with a bottle of Merlot and the sound turned up. Thanks, you have just made my day, my week and, quite possibly, 2009 for me :)
Howie, Belfast
PS: I encourage everyone to download this. One of the greatest records (in terms of capturing a genre, a style, a city and a time) ever made.
Howie, I don't want to get too gushy but its you who's made my week. Enjoy the wine and the sounds and keep in touch.
